Resilience in Business: What an Ironman Taught Me About Commitment, Burnout, and Community

Spoiler: Writing this made me cry. But not for the reasons you might think.

Sometimes life—and business—is just hard. It’s overwhelming, relentless, and demanding.

As I watched my husband Jeff train for 22 weeks for a ½ Ironman, I realized how closely his journey mirrors what so many of us go through as leaders, entrepreneurs, and business owners.

Let me give you a glimpse into what dedication really looks like.

What Is a ½ Ironman? (And Why It’s a Perfect Metaphor for Business Ownership)

A ½ Ironman consists of:

  • 1.2-mile open water swim (think piranhas, not pools)
  • 56-mile bike ride
  • 13.1-mile run

This isn’t a casual weekend jog—it’s a grueling test of endurance, mindset, and grit. Much like running a business.

Jeff’s training schedule? Brutal:

  • 4:45 a.m. wake-up
  • Morning weightlifting
  • Full workday
  • Evening training ride or run
  • Stretch, PT, eat, sleep. Repeat six days a week.

On weekends, he’d spend 3.5 hours in a hot garage grinding out bike miles on a stationary trainer. I can garden for 3.5 hours… but this? This takes something deeper.

Behind the Scenes: The Toll of Doing Hard Things

We’re not new to Ironmans. Jeff’s completed two full Ironman races and two ½ Ironmans. This Sunday was supposed to be his fifth race. But nine days before the event—his calf gave out. Nine days! Just like last time, when his meniscus tore right before race day.

22 weeks of training… nearly undone.

Of course, these things always happen on the weekend. Murphy’s Law, right?

I scrambled to find help—called a PT neighbor (thank you, oatmeal raisin cookies!), found a sports acupuncturist, and learned how to apply KT tape like a total hack.

But here’s what really made me cry.

Community Is Everything: The Power of Showing Up

During what Ironman athletes call “Hell Week” (peak training week—the worst), Jeff hit a serious low. Quiet, exhausted, questioning everything.

So I did something behind the scenes. I texted friends and neighbors, posted on social media, and asked for short notes of encouragement to lift his spirits. He didn’t know. He doesn’t like the spotlight.

But the response… wow.

Handwritten notes. Chalk art. Cards. Jokes. Kind words. Even small gifts. One neighbor’s gift brought him to tears. And that—seeing people rally to encourage someone doing hard things—that is what made me cry.

Business Hell Weeks Happen Too

If you’re running a business, you’ve probably had your own version of Hell Week. Or you’re in it right now. Or it’s coming.

Just like endurance training, the business journey is full of:

  • Setbacks at the worst moments
  • Sacrifices that feel invisible to others
  • Moments where quitting seems easier than pushing forward

Here’s the thing: You’re not alone.

Your community wants to show up for you. They want to see you succeed, grow, and do the hard things.

And if your community doesn’t? Find a new one. Stat.
